About Lagrange STEM Mentoring

Mathematics and science instruction grounded in teaching and research experience.

Lagrange STEM Mentoring provides one-to-one mathematics and science instruction for secondary-school, college, and university students. The emphasis is on clear explanation, quantitative reasoning, structured problem solving, and the development of knowledge and skills that remain useful beyond a single assignment or examination.

Academic and Teaching Expertise

Lagrange STEM Mentoring is led by an experienced mathematics and science teacher and PhD physicist with over a decade of classroom teaching experience, including nine years in Hawaiʻi independent schools. He holds an Advanced Teaching License covering Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics and has taught a broad range of secondary-school and Advanced Placement mathematics and science courses.

The teaching experience is supported by an extensive background in experimental physics. Research work has included participation in major international physics programs at CERN, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and KEK, including the ATLAS, PHENIX, and Belle II experiments.

This combination of classroom teaching, Advanced Placement experience, and scientific research supports instruction that is mathematically rigorous, conceptually clear, and closely aligned with the material students are actually expected to understand and solve.

Teaching Approach

Instruction is centered on subject knowledge, mathematical reasoning, and disciplined problem solving. The goal is to make difficult material understandable without reducing it to disconnected shortcuts.

Conceptual and Mathematical Understanding

Effective problem solving requires more than memorizing formulas or procedures. Instruction develops an understanding of the mathematical relationships and scientific principles that determine how and when a method should be used.

Structured Problem Solving

Difficult problems are approached systematically: identify the relevant quantities and principles, translate the problem into mathematical form, carry out the solution carefully, and examine whether the result is physically or mathematically reasonable.

Precision Where It Matters

One-to-one instruction allows attention to be concentrated on the exact mathematical, conceptual, or procedural difficulty preventing progress. Material that is already understood does not need to be retaught.

The objective is not merely to complete the immediate assignment, but to develop enough command of the underlying material that the student can approach subsequent problems with increasing independence.

Scope of Instruction

Instruction ranges from focused work on a difficult topic to sustained support in a demanding mathematics or science course. Students may need to strengthen prerequisite mathematics, master current course material, prepare for an examination, or work through advanced AP, college, or university-level problems.

Instruction is based on the student's actual course, textbook, assignments, and examinations. There is no requirement to follow a separate tutoring curriculum when the student's existing academic program provides the appropriate framework.

Areas of Instruction

Instruction is available across secondary-school, Advanced Placement, college, and introductory university-level mathematics and science.

Students and Goals

Sessions may address a specific weakness, support steady progress through a course, prepare for an important test or examination, or help a student work successfully at a more advanced level.

Instruction Format

One-to-one sessions are available in person in Honolulu and on Oʻahu, with online instruction throughout Hawaiʻi and nationwide.
